“ The photography shown in the exhibition appears to show a mental landscape of the artist that is reminiscent of the industrial zones of Philadelphia that served as the location for Eraserhead. The title “From the Fringes of the Mind” emerged as a way of evoking the essence of David Lynch’s distinctive form of expression. They use a variety of phenomena to depict situations where things that are on the inside are also on the outside, and vice versa. Another fascinating thing about Lynch’s works is how they break down the psychological dividing line between the inner mind and outward appearances.

Everyone has things that are hiding within, and this kind of story or worldview has the potential to expose them. That which was on the surface gradually becomes overthrown by something powerful lurking underneath. However, something forbidding or savage lurking below eventually rears its head and destroys the ordinary framework. In his films, in particular, a framework of wonderfully ordinary life is depicted to begin with. There are various ways in which Lynch’s films and paintings portray situations in which things lurking below well up and spill over to the surface.

The intention was to more closely approach the psychological state with which that film was imbued. It’s my own reinterpretation of the title of Lynch’s feature-length film Inland Empire. “ The Japanese title of the exhibition literally translates as “Empire of the Fringes of the Mind,” but we dropped the “Empire” from the English title.
